“Blessed is SHE WHO believed the Lord would fulfill HIS promises to her.” -Luke 1:45
There is something about waking up at sunrise to catch a morning run on the beach. There is just something about digging your feet into the sand that just lets you breathe, lets you take in the beauty around you and allows you to just “BE.” As I stood at the tide and gazed out over the beautiful body of water, I was overtaken by who God is. The God that I serve is the creator of all that is before me, under me, and all around me. The ground that I stand upon is in existence by the sound of His voice. As we go through life we forget that in the beginning “the earth was formless and empty, and darkness, covered the deep waters” (Genesis 1:2). There was no form or light BUT in a moment He SPOKE and everything changed. I just stood and listened to the sound of the waves and let the Lord speak to my heart. “This is the God that lives inside of me. I have access to Him by just speaking His name.” How easily we forget this. The bible says that in the beginning the “Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters;” His spirit was actively involved in the creation of the world. It was active in the darkness waiting to bring form. God is hovering over our lives and His care and protection are still active today. In the dark, lonely areas of life, God’s spirit hovers waiting to change everything. He sees your heart, your desires, your dreams, and your passions. He knows all about them because He put them there. But instead of realizing this power inside of us, we remain earthbound and become slaves to the daily grind of life. We put on the mask of performance and never feel good enough to be loved. We try to manufacture our promises and dreams. We work for love, trying harder and harder yet still unfulfilled. While God is saying, “My child, you have nothing to fear, for you wear my righteousness and my boundless and unconditional love is all around you. Take this in, BREATHE, and just REST. Speak my name and you access the ONE who created all that is before you. My greatest desire is to relate and fellowship with you, the one I created. REST my child, just REST.”
REST: a bodily state characterized by minimal functional and metabolic activities; peace of mind or spirit.
When we think about rest we normally think about just taking a quiet time or we are filled with an overwhelming feeling of “I need to carve out some time to read my bible” but what does it really mean to REST in HIM and His promises? When we rest in HIM completely, all fear, worry, doubt, anxiety, and restlessness is gone. We begin to realize who He is and how much He loves us. We realize that He is in control of all that is filling our minds. We begin to live life full of joy and access opportunities to touch more people because we aren’t constantly worried about ourselves; we begin to see those around us in a different way. We live with a confidence that “every step is directed by the Lord.” We become more confident in FAITH allowing us to step out into the unknown resting in the fact that we are one step closer to the promise, to the restoration, to the freedom. Resting shouldn’t be a time we carve out but a lifestyle. It allows us to live our lives in complete surrender to His will. And when you take on this lifestyle, get ready because everything will change. It is when we REST in Him that His voice becomes clearer. We begin to hear that still, small voice, the voice that has always been there but drowned out by the voices of our mind demanding our attention. We get so easily distracted that we forget about the one who loves us most; the one who knows us better than ourselves.
Breathe in and enjoy the Lord. Imagine yourself standing at the tide and looking out over the great body of water. Trust in who He is and what He is doing. Accept the journey you are on and live each moment with joy, “giving Him thanks in everything.” God has not forgotten you. You were apart of God’s perfect plan. You have a power inside of you that can Change the World. You have access to the ONE who spoke and everything changed. Don’t give up. Stay in the fight. Endure the season. Hold on to your promise even when it sounds ridiculous. REST in the place where your FAITH meets the unknown, for there you will find the power to Change the World. God has you. JUST BREATHE.
