“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” -Psalm 129:105
When you think of a small lamp in a really dark place it only lights what’s in front of you, it doesn’t allow you to see everything all at once, but somehow it’s just enough light. It’s just like our daily walk with Jesus. We insist on lighting our entire pathway before we have even taken a step. We want to KNOW what the journey ahead holds before we even get there. Our minds tend to think that it would be to our benefit to know but Jesus sees it completely different. He doesn’t want you to carry the weight of an entire journey but to focus on the faith in a single step. His word is your lamp. It’s your daily bread. Daily steps. Daily trust. Daily strength. It’s coming to Him daily for complete dependence and full reliance on each step you take.
I know for me, if I’m not in daily relationship with Jesus, I worry and get so caught up in what’s next, what tomorrow holds, and “how” the future is going to play out. I tend to set my eyes on tangible moments trying to figure it all out when God is calling me to be faithful right where I’m at. And when I am trying to figure it all out, I lose the opportunity He has given me to be present in the moments that surround me. He’s calling me to be faithful in my steps rather than the knowing of where my steps are going to take me and to trust in the lamp (His word) He has set before me. It’s daily reliance and so much Grace. It’s carving out time each day to spend with Him so that when you get a bit overwhelmed and your heart gets a little heavy, you can rest in His truth and the peace that comes with knowing His word is a lamp unto your feet.
Lord may I find you in my steps today. May I not get so caught up in what’s next and what my eyes can “see” but learn to trust you with each step I take.
