This past week while on vacation and yesterday at work I kept hearing the Lord gently whisper, “They will know that you are mine by your love.” And if I’m honest, I didn’t want to acknowledge that little whisper in my heart because I knew what it would require and cost, the time and the effort I would have to give, and the vulnerability it would take to truly walk in that love. But every moment I began to hear it a little louder and as the walls around my heart began to fall, I began to realize the power that this love can bring, the healing it offers, and the power it has to rescue hardened hearts and lost souls. The Lord for a second took me back to little moments this past week while in the Dominican Republic. The frustration I felt of vender after vender trying to sell things on the beach just to make a small penny to feed their family, I ignored. Their loud voices shouting “Me is Cheapy Cheapy” (hoping those words would lure us in to buy some of the items they carried on their back) I threw up a hand, diverted my gaze, and thought in my head “for the 14th time I don’t want anything.” But the Lord convicted my heart. Their persistent words of “Me is Cheapy Cheapy” rang so deep in my ears. It stirred my soul and brought tears to my eyes. It was much more than them just trying to sell an item but a cry for someone to LOVE them, SEE them, RESPECT them, BEAR with them, and GIVE them a few moments of their time. It was a cry of “this is my last chance and attempt to feed my family tonight.” They begged, I ignored. And as I sit her with tears running down my face, I realized their voices and persistence changed me. It brought me back to the responsibly I carry as a disciple of Christ to LOVE in every relationship of my life.
LOVE is such a powerful thing. Whether it is falling in love, loving your co-workers, taking some time to love your neighbors down the street or in you apartment complex, loving the homeless person on the street corner, or even just taking the time to sit and listen to a sweet friend, LOVE is powerful. LOVE takes time and requires sacrifice. It is patient with those around you, modest and pure, full of contentment and humility. It’s listening when you don’t want to listen. It isn’t rude but ALWAYS seeks the best in others. It looks beyond the surface to the heart and sees the cry of a desperate soul. It’s saddened at evil but rejoices in truth. It is full of HOPE and perseveres through every situation. The way that Jesus showed love was beyond anything we could ever match, it covered ALL, gave all He had, and loved so deep that it cost Him his life.
John 13:35 says,“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” How we love will change the world, change your relationships, and set you apart as someone who has been with Jesus. It will speak louder than words ever could. If you are in a dry season, LOVE deeper. If you are unsure where God is taking you, devote your time and energy to just LOVE. If you feel alone and abandoned, LOVE. One thing I do know is that this type of LOVE will last forever. The things we strive for day after day and give ourselves to at the expense of a greater LOVE, will all pass away. Your heart will still be empty and the struggle will still be there. Let’s strive to live out the 1 Corinthians love the bible talks about. Love is something we all know about, something we all crave in a relationship or a marriage, but when it comes down to it, it’s harder to practice and to live out in our daily lives. What if we lived our lives in a way the world knew we belonged to Jesus just by the way we loved others. God has given us the responsibility to Change the World by His radical LOVE. Find one relationship in your life that lacks love and change it. I promise you, things in your life will begin to shift and change. I know for myself, I want to spend my life living in moments of truly and deeply loving others and putting time into those relationships in my life that mean the most to me. Because I know what the power of LOVE can do.
Happy Sunday friends. I love you all.
